Project Description

CRYSTAL LAKE SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL CULINARY CENTER – Crystal Lake, IL

In 2017, Crystal Lake South High School and FGM Architects engaged S2O Consultants to assist them in the design and generation of a new Culinary Arts Lab.  This project was a collaboration from the start.  It began by walking through the existing school and surveying several potential locations, trying to locate the best space for the program.   As important, we were working with the staff to develop the components while they were simultaneously developing the program. The final delivered project allows students to achieve both management and food handler’s certificates and provides expanded learning/life opportunities for the students.

The space includes both a kitchen (lab) with commercial cooking, storage and ware washing equipment to service up to 24 students in six (6) groups as well as a classroom.  A movable glass partition separates the spaces to allow for multiple uses. The original 1,170 SF space was increased by 200 SF to fit in a ware washing area and by another 530 SF of nearby office space to create a classroom/dining room. Smart renovation of an old teaching kitchen creates a commercially equipped Culinary Arts Center and includes a classroom that doubles as a dining room.

S2O Consultants was hired in to provide complete programming, planning and design of the food service facilities as well as construction documents and administration.

PROJECT COST: Foodservice equipment with installation $250,000
